Please note: Parking is available all around the museum for a fee of about $20. South Coast Plaza has a parking lot (west of the museum) and a connecting overhead bridge (free parking at your own risk).

A bit of background: The Orange County Museum of Art has been a pillar of artistic expression in our community since its inception in 1962. Over the decades, OCMA has evolved into a dynamic institution, showcasing groundbreaking contemporary art and nurturing emerging talents.

Under the visionary leadership of CEO Heidi Zuckerman, OCMA has continued to push boundaries and spark meaningful conversations through its exhibitions and programs. Heidi Zuckerman, renowned for her innovative approach and deep commitment to the arts, has brought fresh perspectives to OCMA's mission, making it a vibrant hub for artistic exploration.

Now, let's talk about what's in store for you at this special event. We'll be highlighting works by iconic artists including Richard Serra, Joan Brown, Chris Burden, and Yves Klein. These artists have left an indelible mark on the art world, each with a unique and influential style.

Richard Serra is celebrated for his monumental sculptures that redefine space and materiality. Joan Brown's expressive paintings capture the spirit of the human experience. Chris Burden's daring performances challenge conventional notions of art and endurance. Yves Klein, famous for his pioneering work in the realm of color and form, continues to inspire generations of artists.

Let's dive into the exciting world of art and explore the fascinating Long Beach Museum of Art, founded in 1950 as a municipal art center. Did you know that the museum's permanent collection includes a large sculpture by Claire Falkenstein found in the outdoor garden and a maquette on a mantel inside Claire's at the Museum building?

The museum is currently under the exhibition direction of Paul Loya, who started working at the LBMA as an associated curator and is now the deputy director of exhibitions. Loya brings new life to the museum, and we begin to see more exhibitions that speak to us, reviving the museum's program. The current emphasis of the museum's directions is on California-based artists.

If you're interested in the key personnel, the key staff is essential to follow and familiarize yourselves with because it’s interesting to see their evolution as professionals and what other exhibitions they bring to light.

The museum has a permanent collection, and rotating temporary exhibitions every few months, depending on the institution's program.

The current exhibition, titled "Wired Crossed" by Ed Templeton, features 266 artworks. Templeton was born in Orange County in 1972, discovered skateboarding as a teenager and learned innovative skate moves quickly with persistence. Sponsorships and magazine covers came in for him rapidly as he flourished as a professional skater. Templeton began documenting his environment in 1994 and picked up the camera to capture some very intimate moments and lifestyle of the skateboarding culture.

The exhibition of photographs spans 17 years and an ongoing series of works done through a documenter's lens with a snapshot aesthetic. These photographs have been curated by the artist from 4,000 photographs down to 266. The exhibition is laid out in different sections of the gallery, and it tells a cohesive narrative. The Map Illustrations shows the routes of the tours and locations of where the photographs were taken. “Demo tours usually occur in the summer, anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months.

Templeton's photographs are candid, raw, and some uncomfortable, provoking the viewer and a lens to a lifestyle and a sport that has become a culture. Templeton is only interested in shooting photographs of people, and he is a self-taught photographer who has continued to work with film photographs since and becomes a respected, self-taught, contemporary photographer.

Templeton has expanded his creativity as he explored painting, exhibiting photographs and paintings, earning him exhibitions in museums around the world. His paintings are in the flat dimension, inspired by Egyptian drawings, and he depicted a similar subject matter of suburbia life (the paintings are not part of this exhibition but can be found in art galleries).

Ed Templeton met Deanne at the age of 14, and their bond is extremely sweet and special. They married at the age of 19. As a married couple and artists, they both have a great deal of influence on each other. Deanna Templeton is often a muse in his works. They have always lived a clean lifestyle, and Deanne is always by his side.

Templeton is also the founder and owner of Toy Machine, a successful skateboard deck company featuring artworks of his illustrations and other collaborative guest artists, a true example of merging all your passions in an industry and truly immersing yourself in the culture.

Templeton used a primary Leica M6 camera (with a 50 mm lens), which is able to get close-ups from up to 3 feet away. The medium of Gelatine photography, which requires the development of chemical solutions in a lab to expose the images, a technique dating back to the turn of the 20th century.

If you're interested in collecting some of Ed Templeton's amazing works, his photographs are editions, of 3, typically, and have different price points as they become limited.

Overall, visiting the exhibition leaves us with a sense of wonder and amazement at the incredible talent of Ed Templeton and his unique perspective on the world around us.
